The forest brought inside. NABE Spa at Nosalowy Dwór by Bernatowicz Architektura
In premium hospitality, the spa area long ago ceased to be an add-on to the room — it has become a reason in its own right for a guest to choose a given property. In Zakopane, this logic is well illustrated by NABE Spa, part of the Nosalowy Dwór resort, whose interiors were prepared by the Bernatowicz Architektura studio. It is a commercial project in which architecture is meant to work directly on the client experience and the operator's business results.
Nature as material, not ornament
The starting point was nature — not as decoration, but as material. On the walls, alongside natural stone, forest moss and oak wood appear. This juxtaposition of textures creates the impression that the Tatra surroundings have been brought inside, with the boundary between interior and mountain landscape deliberately blurred. This choice of raw materials is consistent with the studio's stated approach, which seeks its best ideas in nature and readily reaches for human-friendly materials from local sources. In a spa context this is not only aesthetics — a sensory, 'living' texture supports the sense of regeneration that the operator sells as its core promise.
The visit scripted as a sequence
The guest experience has been designed as a sequence of events. After choosing a treatment at reception, the guest moves into a waiting room arranged like an elegant lounge — with velvet sofas and curtains. Diffused light and calm music are meant to cut off external stimuli before the treatment itself even begins. This is the design of an emotional state, not merely a layout of rooms: the space guides the guest step by step from the entrance to complete calm. The simplicity and elegance of the arrangement translate into warm, soothing interiors — the kind where a sense of seclusion comes easily.
The scale this space handles
The architecture of NABE Spa is no showy mock-up here — it serves a real, large-scale operation. The operator itself makes nine elegant treatment rooms available within the area, including a DUO room for couples and a VIP room with individually tailored treatments, while the offering is rounded out by Day Spa and Wellness packages linked to the sauna, pool, relaxation area and FIT & GYM section. NABE Spa operates within the largest resort in the Tatra Mountains and has been recognised repeatedly in the spa industry — including with the Perfect SPA 2018 title for the best spa hotel for business. These figures and accolades sit on the operator's side, but they reveal the scale the interior was designed for: the space has to withstand intense footfall, many simultaneous treatments and the high expectations of a premium guest, without losing its atmosphere of calm.
Why design works for the operator's results
In a hotel property, a coherent, sensory spa area has measurable value: it extends the length of stay, raises the perceived class of the resort and supports the sale of high-margin treatments and wellness packages. In a segment where guests increasingly choose a property 'for the spa' rather than 'with a spa', the quality of this space translates directly into occupancy outside the ski season and into average revenue per guest. Here design becomes a sales tool: a well-scripted visit increases the chance that a guest will buy an additional treatment, return and recommend the property to others.
Brand continuity, not a single interior
NABE Spa is part of a wider collaboration between Bernatowicz Architektura and the Nosalowy Dwór ecosystem — the studio's portfolio also includes the resort's reception, with an installation of granite rocks and a copper bar. This shows the architect in a role that goes beyond a single room: a partner designing successive points of contact between the guest and the hotel brand, from the entrance area to the relaxation zone. For businesses operating in premium hospitality, such continuity matters — a consistent spatial language builds recognisability and trust more effectively than a single, eye-catching interior.
The studio itself declares that it designs 'unforgettable places, not just interiors', and consults its projects with specialists from industries such as hospitality, gastronomy and branding. NABE Spa is a practical test of this philosophy: a space that must not only look good in photographs, but also guide the guest, regulate their tension and deliver on the promise of premium mountain relaxation — while also working for the operator's results.
