Large-format and ventilated facades — how the premium facade is changing
The facade has stopped being a skin and become a system. In the premium segment there is less and less talk of "rendering" and more and more of a ventilated facade with large-format cladding. This is not an aesthetic change but a technical one: architects specify such solutions because they solve the problem of the building's physics, durability and appearance all at once.
How a ventilated facade is built
It is a layered system: the structural wall, insulation (usually mineral wool), a load-bearing substructure (typically aluminium), a ventilation gap and the outer cladding. The key is the air gap — it allows moisture to be carried away and creates a chimney effect that draws off excess heat in summer and keeps the wall assembly dry all year round. The construction separates the thermal layer from the water-protection layer — a fundamental difference from ETICS render systems. The result: better moisture management, higher thermal comfort and the ability to replace a single panel without disturbing the entire facade.
Large-format panels — why porcelain stoneware and ceramics
Large-format porcelain stoneware and sintered stone are available in panels reaching up to 1.5 × 3 m, giving the effect of an almost monolithic, joint-free surface at a lower weight than stone. The advantage of ceramics is colour durability — the colour is created during firing and is contained within the structure of the material. The facade does not fade, is frost-resistant and stain-resistant, and does not change its appearance under temperature or acid rain. The alternatives — aluminium composites, fibre-cement panels — have their own parameter profiles.
The parameters that really matter
With large-format panels, especially dark ones, the parameters skipped in cheap projects start to matter: LRV (light reflectance value), HBW (brightness) and TSR (total solar reflectance). Dark cladding heats up considerably, which transfers thermal stresses onto the panel and the substructure — hence the need to select a single-supplier system solution. An appropriate TSR limits heat gains and the cooling load.
Why architects specify it
A ventilated facade with large format gives the designer what render cannot: design freedom across large surfaces, predictable durability, serviceability and a consistent appearance. In premium office buildings there is the added energy dimension that works together with certification; in apartments — prestige and durability.
What it means
For a premium developer, this is a decision to accept a higher initial cost in exchange for lower maintenance costs and a longer visual lifespan. Three questions before specifying: whether a complete single-supplier system has been chosen, whether the cladding parameters account for thermal stresses and TSR, and whether a realistic budget has been allowed for the substructure. It is the substructure, not the panel itself, that determines durability and safety.
